WELCOME TO FILEMAKER PRO SERVER FOR MACINTOSH AND POWER MACINTOSH
This trial software shows you how FileMaker™ Pro Server provides client/server file sharing for faster multiuser performance. With it you will share a sample database and witness the performance improvements gained by using FileMaker Pro Server.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO USE THIS TRIAL SOFTWARE
• An Apple Macintosh (68030 processor or higher), Apple Power Macintosh computer, or compatible computer
• Minimum 8 MB of memory
• Hard disk drive
• 1.44 MB disk drive
• System 7.1 or later
• Thread Manager (included)
• FileMaker Pro 3.0. If you don't have FileMaker Pro 3.0, a trial version is available at:
To install the FileMaker Pro Server trial software:
1. Move to the fastest Macintosh available to you on the network.
2. Double-click the Double-Click To Install Server icon.
3. Click Continue.
4. Make sure the hard disk is selected as the destination for the trial folder.
5. Click Save.
6. When you see the message "Installation Successful," click Quit.
After installation, you see a FileMaker Pro Server 3.0 Trial folder on your hard disk, containing:
• FileMaker Pro Server 3.0 Trial application
• Contacts.FP3 file
• Thread Manager file
• Start Here file
If you are using versions of the operating system prior to 7.5:
1. Open the System Folder of your hard disk.
2. Open the Extensions folder in the System Folder.
3. Move the Thread Manager system file from the FileMaker Pro Server 3.0 Trial folder to the Extensions folder.
4. Click OK in response to any message that appears.
5. Restart your computer to let the new extension take effect.
If you are using System 7.5 or higher, Thread Manager is built into the operating system. You do not need the copy included here.
- Drag Thread Manager into the trash can and choose Empty Trash from the Special menu.
INSTALLING MACIPX
If you are using the IPX/SPX networking protocol:
1. On the computer where you installed the FileMaker Pro Server 3.0 Trial...
2. Double-click the Double-Click for MacIPX icon.
3. Click Continue.
4. Make sure the hard disk is selected as the destination folder, and click Save.
5. When you see the message "Installation Successful," click Quit.
6. On the hard disk, open the Installing IPX folder.
7. Open the System Folder of your hard disk.
8. Move the MacIPX file from the Installing IPX folder to the Control Panels folder of your System Folder.
9. Move the MacIPX AppleTalk, MacIPX Ethernet, and MacIPX Token Ring files from the Installing IPX folder to the Extensions folder of your System Folder.
10. Restart your computer to let the new extensions take effect.
NOTE: Do not move the Installing IPX files by dropping them on the closed System Folder. They won't be placed into the Extensions folder and will not function properly.
IMPORTANT: If you are using the TCP/IP networking protocol, you must have Open Transport 1.0.8 or later installed on the same computer as the FileMaker Pro Server 3.0 Trial software.
INSTALLING FILEMAKER PRO 3.0 TRIAL SOFTWARE
FileMaker Pro Server speeds up performance over the network. It opens FileMaker Pro databases and makes them available across the network for users to log into. To display, add, or modify data, or to find and sort records, you need FileMaker Pro 3.0 installed on a second Mac OS computer or PC compatible computer (running Microsoft Windows). A trial version of FileMaker Pro 3.0 for Macintosh is included here. The trial version of FileMaker Pro 3.0 is limited in that you can create a maximum of 50 records, it prints with the name of the product in the background and that the components normally included in the product not necessary for testing the benefits of FileMaker Pro Server 3.0 are not included..
NOTE: You will NOT see the performance enhancements available to you using FileMaker Pro Server if you install FileMaker Pro on the same computer as FileMaker Pro Server.
If you already have FileMaker Pro 3.0 installed on a second computer, you are finished installing. Double-click the Start Here document, found in the FileMaker Pro Server 3.0 Trial folder, and follow the instructions.
If you do not have FileMaker Pro 3.0 installed on a second computer, install FileMaker Pro 3.0 Trial:
1. Move to a second Mac OS computer that meets the following system requirements:
• Hard disk drive
• 1.44 MB disk drive
• Minimum 4 MB of memory, 8 MB recommended
• Apple System Software 7.1 or later
2. Double click the FileMaker Pro 3.0 Trial Installer.
4. Click Continue.
5. Make sure the hard disk is selected as the destination for the trial folder, and click Save.
6. When you see the message "Installation Successful," click Quit.
After installation, you should have a FileMaker Pro 3.0 Trial folder on your hard disk, containing the FileMaker Pro 3.0 Trial application.
INSTALLING MACIPX
If you are using the IPX/SPX networking protocol:
1. On the computer where you installed the FileMaker Pro 3.0 Trial, insert the FileMaker Pro Server 3.0 Trial disk.
2. Double-click the Double-Click for MacIPX icon.
3. Click Continue.
4. Make sure the hard disk is selected as the destination folder, and click Save.
5. When you see the message "Installation Successful," click Quit.
6. On the hard disk, open the Installing IPX folder.
7. Open the System Folder of your hard disk.
8. Move the MacIPX file from the Installing IPX folder to the Control Panels folder of your System Folder.
9. Move the MacIPX AppleTalk, MacIPX Ethernet, and MacIPX Token Ring files from the Installing IPX folder to the Extensions folder of your System Folder.
10. Restart your computer to let the new extensions take effect.
NOTE: Do not move the Installing IPX files by dropping them on the closed System Folder. They won't be placed into the Extensions folder and will not function properly.
CHOOSING A NETWORK PROTOCOL
FileMaker Pro 3.0 can use AppleTalk, IPX/SPX, or TCP/IP to communicate with other FileMaker Pro users across the network. By default, FileMaker Pro uses AppleTalk.
• If you installed the IPX/SPX protocol, you can select it from the Preferences dialog box. (See the instructions in "INSTALLING MACIPX," earlier in this document, to install the MacIPX software included with this trial software.)
• To use the TCP/IP protocol, be sure you have separately installed the MacTCP Control Panel (2.0.6 or later) or Open Transport (1.0.8 or later).
The network software must be running before you can choose the protocol.
To choose a network protocol:
1. Open FileMaker Pro 3.0.
2. Choose Preferences from the Edit menu.
3. In the Preferences dialog box, be sure General is selected in the pop-up menu.
4. Choose an option from the Network protocol pop-up menu.
5. Click Done.
6. If you changed your network protocol, choose Quit from the File menu and restart FileMaker Pro to let the change take effect.
You've now installed the trial software!
1. Return to the computer on which you installed FileMaker Pro Server 3.0 Trial.
2. Open the FileMaker Pro Server 3.0 Trial folder.
3. Double-click the Start Here document, and follow the instructions.
